First Few Days of Work

Starting a new job can always be scary....in fact...I have only had one "adult" job really. I substitute taught right out of college while I went to graduate school and then I was hired by that principal to work at PGMS and I worked there for 3 years. So really...I have had one boss and one job since college. I worked a string of "teenage" jobs when I was younger. Great Clips, Publix, YMCA Camp Counselor, Tuesday Morning....

And now for SAY....it has been a great experience so far. I love being back in the school environment and can't wait to work with the kids. It looks like I will have a group of about 18, 5th graders each afternoon. Perfect age and perfect group size. We will do homework, snack time, outside organized group activities, and then centers. I am most excited about getting outside and having a blast playing all the games I did back when I was their age (Steal the Bacon, Dodgeball, Four Square, Around the World, Relay Races etc.) My group is mostly boys and being the tomboy I am...fine by me! I know they will be up for anything and I won't have to hear them complain about being hot, sweaty, or breaking a nail :)

The school is so cute...it is an older building which I love for one reason...you go outside!! The classrooms all have outdoor entrances and to get from one place to another you must walk outside. The kids' bookbags hang out hooks outside the room..sooo adorable. They also have an amazing blacktop in the back with all kinds of cool things painted on it and ready for so many activities. It is also fun to be back in an Elementary school where I can use my creativity to make fun bulletin boards etc. By middle school a lot of that is done with and not deemed "cool" so I am excited to be a little dorky again and relate to the younger kiddos.

I also went and applied to another part time job this morning. It is for a teacher assistant position at San Diego Charter School. I applied online and then they asked me to come in for a series of items/tests today. It was quite amusing. The first thing I did was some sort of personality test...I kid you not...there were multiple questions on there about fighting, did I like to punch people, and could I win a fist fight....so random!!!!!!!! Also questions about stealing from the job and extensive questions about drug use (many drugs I had never even heard of). The questions were so crazy to me I actually started laughing out loud as I took them. Then a 10 question Math quiz. This school goes 7-12th grade so I was a little nervous about this...luckily 9 out of 10 questions were straight from my 6th grade material I used to teach...so easy enough! Then I had to grade a mock essay using a rubric. Again....not too bad.

By the time I got back to my job at SAY I had already gotten an email saying I made it to the "pool" of applicants and now teachers who need assistants will look over resumes and applications and contact us if they are interested. Worth a shot and worth seeing what it is all about...I like to keep my options open!

No huge plans for the Labor Day weekend...of course the usual of going to the beach, being outside with Roxie, exploring the city, and some college football of course.

I am beyond depressed I won't be seeing my DAWGS play and hope to at least make it somewhere to watch...however a 9am West coast kickoff is not too tempting :(
