Day 3: Deep in the Heart of Texas

Well not too much to report today from Dallas, TX (technically we are in Garland, TX but whatever). Our La Quinta is SUPER nice...apparently only 14 months old. I was impressed with the one in New Orleans but now this one makes that one look a tad bit shabby!

The morning started off with another streetcar ride in New Orleans to finally get our yummy beignets at Cafe Du Monde (see very unflattering picture of a very fat and happy me!). They were delicious and a must for sure if ever in the city. Packed up Roxie and our stuff and we hit the road right before noon. I have determined there is not much to see between New Orleans and Dallas. We crossed over what seemed like 30 bridges and one bridge was about 3 miles long that took us over swamp land. Some was pretty, some was not. The heat and sun continue to kick our butt...the hottest I saw it register today was 105 but as the weatherman said on the radio "the heat index is 115..stay inside people!" We had the AC on full blast but since we are headed West we had the sun beating down on us most of the day. It took us 8 solid hours (so impressed with how well my plan and map skills have been working out...I promised my mom 8 hour driving days!). We stopped as usual for gas and to let Roxie get out. We had a nice little picnic lunch at the rest stop at the Texas state line (see pic of Rox and I...we are small...sign is BIG!). My mom made homemade pimento cheese so we have been enjoying some yummy sandwiches as we are trying to avoid eating too much junk and fast food on the road.

I have also noticed a lot of broken down cars and tons of tires torn apart on the side of the road...but not to jinx us...we are doing great! The rooftop cargo doesn't budge and we haven't hit a drop of rain so we haven't had to test its waterproof capabilities.

Nada to do tonight but enjoy a Papa John's pizza and some R and R at the hotel. We are thinking instead of our usual 2nd shower of the day (again...its hot so we are sweaty, sweaty) we might take a dip in the hotel pool.

Sleeping in tomorrow and then headed onto Amarillo, TX and some driving on the old Route 66. Pretty cool...I will be on the look out for the weird stuff like "Largest Ball of Yarn" and " 3 Headed Chicken" or whatever weird stuff people trek miles off their path in search of...I am not too cool for a photo op :)
