Day 8: Sunny and 75..San Diego!!!

We. Have. Arrived. Need I say more?!?
It was a decent drive from Phoenix to San Diego.....about 6 hours by the time we made all of our stops with the pup. And...something new that I experienced was the lovely Border Patrol Checkpoints. I mean... I knew San Diego was close to Mexico but I never realized or thought about how that would impact the roads and living around here. We experienced 3 checkpoints!!! At the first one I was a little intimidated wondering if I was gonna need my license, registration, and you know... spout off the Pledge Of Allegiance and name the first 5 presidents (kidding). However, my mom and I quickly learned that as long as you "look white" they pass you through quickly without batting an eye. The first stop we were behind a truck with about 6 people crammed in it...we saw that they had to show their i.d's but then they went through. On the last border check they had an interesting sign posted with a bunch of "Border Patrol Facts" I wanted to take a picture but my gut told me this might be a "no-no" for border patrol stops. ha It mentioned all the drugs, illegal immigrants, and criminals that had been found at that specific stop. Interesting.

We also drove through an area that was not the easiest for me. Even though I have been skydiving and bungee jumping there are certain heights and situations I do not care for. Driving on curvy roads, near cliffs, big bridges, and open spaces just isn't my thing. This area started by having a sign that read "High Winds for the Next 100 Miles" gee...great. Then a little while down the road another sign that read "Avoid overheating. Turn off AC for the next 10 miles" Ummm...ooohhkkk?! Mind you it was 102 outside during this lovely part of the drive. As we twisted and turned on the right side of the road you saw these stations of water and signs that said "Radiator Water"...again...not comforting. We also saw 2 cars pulled over, smoking, with their hoods up. Yup...this was not a fun part of the drive. I felt like I was back in driver's ed. again with both hands on the steering wheel at "10 and 2" ha---

So we made it through and the few time I allowed myself to look to the left or right of me...it was beautiful!

We got to the last La Quinta of our trip :) I will have to say...they have been totally fine the entire time. Some were nicer than others but none of them grossed me out or made me feel unsafe by any means. I would stay in any of them again. The one in San Diego is not too far from my apartment and close to the Mall and all the stores etc. we will need to hit up to furnish my place.

I met my roommate at my new place (she was just arriving from a weekend in Las Vegas) and we sat and chatted for a couple of hours! She is super nice and I think we are going to have a blast as roomies! I look forward to meeting new people, making new friends, and learning my way around my new city. Our apartment is SUPER nice...even better than the pictures I had seen. The courtyard is TO DIE FOR. It has lush landscaping, community patio furniture, and a nice grill for everyone. On my way back to the hotel I look over and on the corner of my street a bunch of people are playing beer pong in their yard...my kind of neighborhood!

My mom and I enjoyed a nice waterfront dinner at The Fish Market. It was in downtown San Diego and awesome! Mom celebrated turning 53 in fine fashion I think. We parked kinda far away so we took a guy who has a bicycle and a wagon type thing attached to the back of it. Bless his heart for biking us back to the car! We are in for the night as we will start early in the morning with unloading my car at the apartment and then painting my bedroom. So excited to start decorating. I hope to spend the night in my place by Tuesday or Wednesday night.

Cheers from the West Coast! Been less than 24 hrs but I am already loving my new home.
